Mathematics/ Further mathematics
SUBJECT INTRODUCTION
Head of Department: Ms D Todorinovic
Within the Mathematics department we aim to challenge every student to reach their full potential in mathematics. The Mathematics department is staffed by ten fully qualified mathematicians.
THE CURRICULUM
Please note, in order to study A Level Mathematics, students require Grade 7 or above at GCSE and for Further Mathematics, a minimum of grade 8.
There are three Mathematics groups - two general A-Level Mathematics groups and one Further Maths group. All students sit the A Level exam at the end of Year 13.
HOMEWORK
A Level homework is set after every lesson as a combination of exercises from the course textbooks and from past examination questions. Students are expected to do 2 hours of independent study work 4-5 times a week.
ENRICHMENT AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR
Maths Inspiration lecture : One day lecture organised by 'Stand up Maths' group aimed at year 12 students. This is another opportunity for students to hear about many applications of Mathematics and careers related to it.
UKMT Senior Maths Challenge - All KS5 students who study Maths are offered the opportunity to compete in this Maths challenge. Students securing gold awards move on to compete in follow-on rounds – Senior Kangaroo and Mathematical Olympiad.
MAT and TMUA university admission test practice - offered to year 12 students.
A level STEM Enrichment Classes organised and delivered in partnership with St. Paul's independent school; aimed at year 12 and year 13 students.
Mentoring opportunities - Year 12/13 students have the opportunity to join the Colet Mentoring online mentoring app; this supports development of students' communication and teaching skills.
CAREERS
Mathematics is a powerful tool with many applications. Advanced mathematical training can lead to many career opportunities, including business, finance, medicine, engineering, and basic sciences.
At the same time, mathematics is a self-contained subject that is worth studying simply for its elegance. While challenging at times, the study of mathematics can bring a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Mathematics is an ideal subject for people who enjoy abstract thinking.
