Head of Art
Mr Hordern

Overview

The Art and Design Department at Christ's aims to engage, inspire and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of Art, Craft and Design.

As pupils progress through the school, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design. They should also know how Art and Design both reflects and shapes our history, and contributes to the culture, creativity and economic growth of the world around them.

Facilities

We have two large fully equipped specialist Art rooms, with a kiln, specialist screen and etching press printmaking spaces. We are supported within the Art and Technology faculty for 3D work including a hearth for metal work and a laser cutter.

Key Stage 3

KS3 Art students complete a term of painting, a term of printmaking and a term of sculpture each year. The first half of each term is used to produce preparatory work, the second for final outcomes. This approach directly reflects the time needed and assessment methods at KS4 and 5. Each term will have a new topic with different artists used as starting points and influence. Skills and knowledge are consistently revisited throughout with incremental challenges and control of materials, processes and equipment added.

Key Stage 4

KS4 Art students complete termly projects where individual outcomes are prioritised and knowledge and skill progression is mapped out to develop excellent outcomes. Students study a wide and contemporary selection of artists and designers to inspire their work and project developments.
