Overview

Design & Technology at Christ’s is a dynamic and innovative subject that empowers students to think creatively and critically. Through engaging, hands-on experiences, students learn to design and create practical solutions to real-world challenges. Our curriculum explores a diverse range of topics, including engineering, product design, manufacture, energy and environment, sustainability, emerging technologies and careers.

 


 

Facilities

Our Design & Technology department features state-of-the-art facilities that foster creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning. These include a specialist workshop equipped with traditional wood and metalworking tools alongside modern CAM machinery, such as a laser cutter and 3D printer, enabling students to bring their designs to life. A dedicated computer suite as well as a department set of Chromebooks with CAD software supports the development of technical design skills, while a well-organized technician prep area ensures seamless support for lessons and projects.


 

Key Stage 3

KS3 Design & Technology lessons are once per fortnight and delivered throughout the year. Each year group completes a separate stand alone project. The Department uses GCSE objectives for consistency of assessment language as students move through the curriculum at KS3. Skills and knowledge are consistently revisited throughout with incremental challenges and control of materials, processes and equipment added.

 

Key Stage 4

At KS4, students complete an extensive NEA (Non-Exam Assessment) project, accounting for 50% of their GCSE, where creativity and individual outcomes take priority. Guided by continual assessment, students refine their ideas to produce innovative and high-quality final pieces. Alongside this, theory-based subject knowledge is seamlessly integrated, following the AQA GCSE Design & Technology specification, ensuring students gain a comprehensive understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject.
