Head of Drama | Ms Thom |
Overview
The Drama department at Christ’s is committed to delivering the highest quality of teaching and learning both in and outside of the classroom. It is our aim to deliver a curriculum that challenges all students and stretches the most practically able. This is supported by the variety of extra-curricular activities available.
Drama is all about understanding drama as an ‘art form’ as well as developing skills in communication, cooperation and understanding. You will play many parts in different imaginary situations. You will have the opportunity to create your own work as well as look at plays written by other people. We aim to build your confidence and grow your creativity throughout your time at Christ’s.
Facilities
Drama is taught in two dedicated specialist spaces; the Drama Hall in the main building and in the Drama Studio in the Sixth Form Centre. Both spaces include excellent technical facilities and we are equipped to stage both smaller scale plays, and full scale musical productions.
Key Stage 3
All students study drama in Key Stage 3.
Students study a range of scripted text and stimulus based devising in Key Stage 3. Novels, poems and short stories from our Literary Heritage and that of our wider world heritage are used as stimulus and to generate performance work. Students have one 1 hour session of Drama every week in Key Stage 3. Students develop their ability to be a reflective practitioner by offering verbal analysis of their work or that of others in every lesson. There is a diverse range of performance undertaken appropriate to different audiences and purposes.
Drama topics are taught in half-term modules and students have a practical assessment at the end of each module. Students' progress is assessed regularly and tracked against target grades.
Key Stage 4
AQA GCSE Drama is a dynamic and engaging course that offers students a comprehensive understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects of theatre. The course is split into three key components: Understanding Drama (the study of plays, live performances, and theatrical roles), Devising Drama (creating original performances), and Texts in Practice (performing scripted extracts). Students will develop their acting, directing, and design skills, while also exploring the history and impact of theatre. The course emphasises creativity, collaboration, and critical analysis, preparing students for further study or careers in the performing arts.
