Course summary

Within the Mathematics department we aim to challenge every student to reach their full potential in mathematics. The Mathematics department is staffed by nine fully qualified mathematicians.

There are four  Mathematics groups - two general A-Level Mathematics groups,  one Further Maths group and one AS Core Maths group.

All A level Maths and Further Maths students sit the A Level exam at the end of Year 13.

Facilities

All Maths classrooms are located in Sixth Form Block and department has a class set of chromebooks which are available to Maths students as needed. 

Assessment method

Students sit cumulative assessments twice per half term. Both year groups get revision list and assessment schedule at the start of the academic year. Year 12 students have the end of year exam in June and year 13 students have two sets of PPE exams in line with Sixth Form school calendar. 

 

GCSE requirements

A level Mathematics - students require a minimum grade 7 at GCSE.

A Level Further Maths, they need to achieve GCSE grade 8 or better

AS Core Maths, they need to achieve GCSE Higher grade 5 or better. 

 

Enrichment and Extra-Curricular

Maths in Action talk aimed at year 12 students. This is an opportunity for students to hear about many applications of Mathematics and careers related to it. Five engaging and interactive sessions are designed to complement KS5 curriculum. They include a range of topics from statistics and engineering to data science and pure mathematics. 

UKMT Senior Maths Challenge - All KS5 students who study Maths are offered the opportunity to compete in this Maths challenge. Students securing gold awards move on to compete in follow-on rounds – Senior Kangaroo and Mathematical Olympiad.

MAT, STEP and TMUA university admission test practice - offered to year 12 students.

A level STEM Enrichment Classes organised and delivered in partnership with St. Paul's independent school; aimed at year 12 and year 13 students.

Mentoring opportunities - Year 12 studnets have the opportunity to be trained as mentors through supporting year 11 GCSE students in preparation for their final exams.
